CAN’T WAIT FOR PASSPORT APPROVAL? FOLLOW THESE STEPS
If you're a digital nomad, expat, or frequent traveler, passport renewal is one of those things that can quietly derail your entire travel plan. Standard processing can take weeks, even with expedited processing. So what do you do when you need a passport, like, right now?
There's a lesser-known option that most people have never heard of, and it can get a passport in your hands within a few days.
The US State Department operates 26 regional passport agencies across the country where eligible travelers can apply for or renew a passport in person.
The catch: you can't just show up. These offices are appointment-only, and the appointments are reserved exclusively for travelers with urgent travel needs within 14 calendar days.
There are two situations that qualify:
Life or death emergency. If an immediate family member abroad has died, is in hospice care, or has suffered a life-threatening medical event, you qualify. You'll need supporting documentation - a death certificate or a signed letter from a hospital physician.
Booked international travel within 14 days. If you have international travel booked within the next two weeks, that qualifies as urgent. You'll need to show proof of that booking at your appointment. A refundable flight ticket works fine for this purpose.
The fees break down as follows:
Standard passport renewal fee: $130
Expedited service fee: $60
1-2 day delivery: $22.05
Total: $212.05
It's more expensive than a standard renewal, but compared to missing a flight or scrambling last-minute, it's well worth it.
HOW TO BOOK
You have two options: use the State Department's online portal or call 1-877-487-2778. Either way, you'll be asked for your travel date and your preferred passport agency location.
To justify the appointment, you must show documented proof of international travel booked within 14 calendar days. A flight receipt with a confirmation number works, as does a hotel reservation or cruise ticket.
On the day of your appointment, bring printed copies of everything: your completed application form, your passport photo, your travel proof, and appointment confirmation number. Don't show up with files on your phone.
Now sort out your domicile
Now that you got your passport fast, the next step is getting your Florida ID quickly. If you come from a high-tax state, this move is a no-brainer for expats and nomads to save big money.
