“It’s a result.” -Todd Boehly on Chelsea’s 1-0 win over Leeds

Eagles in Europe:

Chelsea’s Christian Pulisic 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 (24; Hershey, PA) and Dortmund’s Gio Reyna 🇩🇪 (20; Bedford, NY) may have both begun Tuesday’s Baby Eagle Champions League Derby as subs, but both finished the match on the pitch.

Reyna was the first to play, subbing on for an injured Julian Brandt in the fifth minute. An unused sub for BVB’s four previous matches, the 20-year-old from Bedford, N.Y. showed no signs of rust when called upon and was a decent attacking threat throughout. Highlights included: a menacing shot blocked, mixing it up with Pulisic in midfield a bit, and a German Peaky Blinders bit part (though this was before kick-off). Overall, a 7.6 Fotmob isn’t such a bad outing.

Pulisic only came on in the 83rd minute, but having been out due to injury since Jan. 5, simply being called into action in such an important match for Chelsea can be seen as a positive for Hershey Jesus. Plus, we got a couple of great Baby Eagle Action Shots of the two squaring up on the pitch. Congrats to CP10 and Chelsea on advancing with their 2-0 win.

Elsewhere, Djordje Mihailovic 🇳🇱 (24; Lemont, IL) was an 82nd minute sub for AZ Alkmaar in their surprising 2-1 win at Lazio on Tuesday in the Europa Conference League. Never easy to beat a team led by a gruff Italian manager who smokes darts during training.

Fabulous Hürzeler:

It’s now six wins in six matches in charge for 30-year-old FC St. Pauli manager Fabian Hürzeler. Having taken over the 2. Bundesliga side in December, the 30-year-old born in Houston, Texas who played with the United States U20s now has a perfect 18 out of 18 points, with the most recent win coming over fourth-place Paderborn. Hürzeler doesn’t see much value in focusing on his perfect start, however. 🗣 "As far as I'm concerned, as soon as the next game is on the agenda, the last one has gone. I'm trying to impress that on the team as well. Runs have no value.”

News and Notes:

  • Leeds may have fallen to Chelsea Saturday, but all three of their American players — Brenden Aaronson 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 (22; Medford, NJ), Tyler Adams 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 (24; Wappingers Falls, NY), and Weston McKennie 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 (24; Little Elm, TX) — started the match. Making the Lilywhites 27.2727272727% American. Also, Adams added another hit to his “You Don’t Know Where I’m From Dawg” mixtape (WATCH).

  • Despite Tim Ream 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 (35; St. Louis, MO) and Antonee Robinson 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 (25; Liverpool, ENG) starting, Fulham lost to Brentford Monday. But at least we got more Reamaldinho (WATCH).

  • Daryl Dike 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 (22; Edmond, OK) Origi’ed the winner for West Brom in their 1-0 victory over Wigan Athletic Tuesday (WATCH). It was Dike’s third goal in his last three matches, and sixth on the season overall.

  • In Ange Postecoglou, Cameron Carter-Vickers 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 (25; Southend-on-Sea, ENG) has a very understanding coach with an excellent sense of humor at Celtic (WATCH). Which might be why the Hoops have won 11 straight in all competitions. Vibes matter.

  • It’s early, but Matthew Hoppe 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 (21; Yorba Linda, CA) seems to be having a great semester abroad in Edinburgh. The USMNT striker had an assist in Hibernian’s 4-1 win at Livingston (WATCH), giving him two goal contributions in his first three appearances for the Scottish club.

  • Club America star Alejandro Zendejas 🇲🇽 (25; Ciudad Juarez, MEX) has reportedly committed his international future to the USMNT. 🙂 Even if we don’t have a coach, sporting director, etc. 🙁

  • Ricardo Pepi 🇳🇱 (20; El Paso, TX) almost led underdog FC Groningen to a result at top-of-the-table Feyenoord on Saturday, but the visitors conceded in the 88th minute in the 1-0 loss (Pepi subbed off at 87’). The USMNT striker has been excellent overall, however, as shown by him being named to the Eredivisie Team of the Month for February … which is essentially just Pepi and 10 players from Ajax and PSV.

  • Scheduled to stay with Rangers in Scotland for the entire 2022-23 season, James Sands 🇺🇸 (22; Rye, NY) has left the Teddy Bears early through mutual consent, and returned to NYCFC. Rangers manager Michael Beale 🗣 “I would like to thank James for his time at Rangers. He was a well-liked player in our squad and I enjoyed working with him on a daily basis ... The opportunity to return to NYCFC for the start of the MLS season, where he will be a key player in their squad, was something that we felt was correct for all parties.”

  • Zack Steffen 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 (27; Downington, PA) got his third shutout in his last seven starts, as Middlesbrough blanked Reading 5-0 on Saturday. Boro has won six of seven over that stretch.

  • Taylor Booth 🇳🇱 (21; Eden, UT) is in demand. Voetbal International is reporting (in Dutch) that the attacking midfielder is drawing interest from Spain, England, and one club that was/is in the Champions League Round of 16. Another report from the Netherlands has Ajax and PSV in pursuit. Not bad business for FC Utrecht, who got Booth on a free from Bayern.

  • He’s not gone abroad yet, but young USL star Josh Wynder 🇺🇸 (17; Louisville, KY) is reportedly drawing a ton of interest from Europe. This according to LouCity coach Danny Cruz in an interview with… Herculez Gomez.

Stationary Bike Set:

Josh Sargent 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 (23; O’Fallon, MO) has missed Norwich City’s last three matches due to ankle injury, but “he’s close” to returning, according to Canaries boss David WagnerMalik Tillman 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 (20; Nürnberg, GER) missed Rangers’ win over Kilmarnock Saturday due to injury. He’s also expected to miss Wednesday’s league visit to Hibs, but this is due to manager Michael Beale saving him for Rangers’ Scottish Cup quarter final on Sunday … Welcome back, Haji Wright 🇹🇷 (24; Los Angeles, CA)! The World Cup goal-scorer made his first appearance for Antalyaspor since January 7 on Monday.

Parting Shots:

There’s life after Dortmund after all. In a move that’s reinvigorated his young career, 23-year-old Lennard Maloney 🇩🇪 (23; Berlin, GER) left BVB for 2. Bundesliga side FC Heidenheim this past summer, and has since become a key starter at defensive midfielder for the promotion hopefuls. Born in Berlin to an American father and a German mother, Maloney has started 21 of 23 matches for Heidenheim this season, with the South German club now just three points off first place in the second tier. Germerican Jack Rodwell has played for the United States U20s twice, and has previously stated his desire to play for the USMNT.
